  3. WP 2.4

Reducing food loss and waste along the food supply chain is a relevant objective to improve the environment, income for chain actors, and food security for low-income consumers. However, due to the complexity and length of food supply chains, an integrated approach is needed, requiring investments in efficient technologies, adequate packaging, road infrastructure and market linkages, and training and education for chain actors and consumers.

The Work Package 2.4 is dedicated to finding new and innovative solutions for sustainable logistics and distribution in agri-food supply chains. In this context, research activities under this WP explore several exciting opportunities to improve the sustainability of the food supply chain and reduce waste.

One of the focus areas is the development of green logistics strategies, practices, and actions. The aim is to identify the critical aspects of logistics, such as network design, transport, warehousing, and innovation, and implement sustainable solutions. Additionally, WP 2.4 investigates the collection, management, and distribution of by-products, including using digital shadowing and digital twin technologies in connection with Spoke 1.

Another key area is the development of local and urban logistics solutions for the distribution of agri-food products. The focus is reducing waste by introducing sustainable local distribution and last-mile delivery solutions. This may involve the development of new distribution networks, using parcel lockers for last-mile delivery, and implementing digital solutions, such as virtual markets for local agricultural products.

Task and deliverables

Task 2.4.1.

New solutions for sustainable logistics in food supply chains. The task is intended to identify and classify the main green logistics strategies, practices, and actions with reference to key aspects such as network design, transport, warehousing, and logistics innovation (4.0 Paradigm). The collection, management and distribution of by-products and related data will be investigated, resorting to solutions like digital shadowing and digital twins (in connection with Spoke 1).

Task 2.4.2.

New local and urban logistics solutions for the distribution of agri-food products. Local distribution and last-mile deliveries are addressed to significantly impact on sustainability. Logistics solutions may regard the development of new distribution networks (e.g., by introducing local hubs), the employment of specific last- mile delivery solutions (e.g., parcel lockers), and the introduction of digital solutions (e.g., platforms as virtual markets for local agricultural products) (in connection with Spokes 1 and 7).
