CIRFOOD (https://www.cirfood.com/), with over 50 years of history, is one of the leading Italian businesses operating in the sectors of collective catering, commercial catering and employee welfare services for businesses.

Today, it is present in 17 regions and 74 provinces in Italy, as well as abroad, in Belgium, managing company restaurants in the country's most important business districts, and in the Netherlands, managing 130 venues offering services focused on healthy, quality food. In the last year, the company has produced over 100 million meals thanks to the work of 13,000 people, recording revenues of 450 million euros in 2021. In 2022, CIRFOOD DISTRICT is expected to open a research and innovation centre where new solutions in the field of nutrition and food service can be designed and tested. It will be a multifunctional space to co- design and share ideas and best practices, which will extend over a surface area of 1,600 square meters within a park of over 7,000 square meters of outdoor area.

Research Interests

The areas where CIRFOOD can bring value are in particular: Global Sustainability; Food Quality and Nutrition; and Policy, Behaviour and Education.

The company has always been very attentive to the quality of the food offered and to the sustainability of what it proposes. There is continuous tracking of raw materials and careful warehouse management. In fact, a solution has been developed that optimizes their management, thanks to the predictive ability of artificial intelligence, improving their performance and reducing waste. Reducing waste is present across all CIRFOOD business streams. The use of technology and smart solutions has made it possible to monitor the surplus in kitchens and meal centers to optimize its quantity.

The Multidisciplinary Research Approach

At its core, CIRFOOD has an interfunctional and multidisciplinary approach, which allows the development of different but complementary projects as are the different sectors in which the company operates. CIRFOOD is in fact constantly engaged in the design of tenders or projects that require transversal skills, such as food and gastronomic knowledge and quality of the food offer, optimal management of logistics and operations, wise use of information and digital systems in processes.

Research Collaborations

The leadership position in the sector and the constant speed with which the reference market evolves have led to an increasingly open innovation-oriented approach, an essential tool to create value and be more competitive on the market. This approach is achieved through proactive interaction with national and international, public and private partners. In particular, CIRFOOD currently collaborates with top universities and research centers such as the University of Parma, the University of Gastronomic Sciences of Pollenzo, the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna and Reggio Children.
